We want to bring Kristan Hawkins to more campuses in the Spring. You can support our efforts by giving here.
A pro-abortion student at Southern Methodist University tried to argue with SFLA President Kristan Hawkins… and lost the argument as soon as it began. In the exchange, which was part of Kristan’s Lies Pro-Choice Politicians Tell Speaking Tour, the student tried to use the same, tired, arguments about how we need unlimited-abortion-on-demand-at-any-point-and-at-taxpayer-expense due to poverty.
The student, we’ll call her Joan Swift because she has an idea for how to eliminate poverty (though in this case, it’s not satire), argued that poor people should have more abortions because it will reduce poverty.
Kristan Hawkins responded with a pretty clear argument: should people in poverty be able to kill their children after the fact? Or what if the family has the baby and then loses a job and finds themselves in poverty; is killing justified then? Or if a child is put in foster care, is it justified to kill them now?
In other words, is poverty a good enough reason to end someone’s life?
The student, who was probably hearing an adult conservative speak on campus for the first time, stammered to try to figure out the way around this one. On one hand, she wants to support abortion. But on the other hand, she had never thought through the logical implications of her political stance, beyond what looked cool on a bumper sticker and what made her pro-abortion professors happy.
Kristan pointed out that all human beings, no matter their circumstances, deserve human rights. The student’s response?
WHAT IF THAT CHILD STARVES IN POVERTY?
Hmm. Yeah, “that child” is the one we’re saying shouldn’t be killed in-utero. These circumstantial excuses to support abortion is what makes us want to give the other side the benefit of the doubt, like in some twisted way their motivations are good. They just want to end poverty, right?
But their unwillingness to have a normal human conversation or answer the question, “What is a good enough reason to kill someone?” makes that a bit difficult.
